DUKE TIP: The bubonic plague. Spanish flu. Swine flu. All three are pandemics that have had a profound effect on society. Pandemics, infectious diseases occurring over a widespread geographic area and affecting a large number of people, have occurred since ancient times and public health officials throughout the world say it’s a matter of when, not if, the next pandemic will happen. This summer, the World Health Organization is concerned about a potential influenza pandemic on the horizon, and you must do your part as an expert in your field to prevent, prepare for, and contain the outbreak before it grows to pandemic proportions. Join TIP and help solve the CRISIS!CRISIS (Creative Resolutions of Impending Situations with Intelligent Solutions) is Duke TIP’s summer residential program for current fifth and sixth graders in the 4th–6th Grade Talent Search. Held on the campuses of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, and Washington University in St. Louis, MO, CRISIS builds leadership and teamwork skills through problem-based learning. Students are asked to assume roles of professionals on research teams, collaborating with team members in fields such as engineering, business, journalism, and medicine, to solve the “crisis.”Check out this year’s CRISIS dates and fees as well as financial aid information. Be sure to register soon, as spots last year filled very quickly. We hope to solve the CRISIS with you in Raleigh, St. Petersburg, or St. Louis this summer! Apply now.
